Ramaphosa becomes SADC Chair
South Africa is formally assuming the SADC Chairpersonship for 2026/27, with President Cyril Ramaphosa taking over as the bloc’s Chairperson. Ramaphosa has been serving as interim chair since November 2025, after Madagascar relinquished the position amid a political crisis in that country.
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema currently holds the role of Interim Incoming Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of SADC.
Who is attending
Nine heads of state are reported to be attending in person, while other member states are represented by government delegations.
What’s on the agenda
This year’s summit theme is: “Resilient, sustainable and inclusive industrialisation through Infrastructure Development, Agricultural and Critical Minerals Transformation in Pursuit of a Just World.” In simple terms, leaders are focused on growing the region through better infrastructure, farming, and the use of critical minerals.
Other issues expected to come up include:
- Migration and the free movement of people are also expected to feature in discussions. South Africa has been pushing for progress on the region’s stalled free-movement framework. Recent reports indicate that Zimbabwe and Mozambique have opposed bringing the issue directly before summit leaders.
- The security situation in eastern DRC
- Madagascar’s political crisis and its path back to elections
No final decisions or an official closing communiqué have been released yet.
Security tightened in Durban
Security was tightened around the summit venue after three people were detained in connection with access-control incidents. Two Congolese nationals were arrested for allegedly trying to enter the venue using accreditation issued to other people, while a Zimbabwean national was arrested earlier after allegedly trying to obtain accreditation by posing as a performing artist.
A protest march is also planned in Durban today. Police say people have the right to protest, but it must not disrupt the summit.
What happens next
SADC is expected to release an official summary of the summit’s decisions once it ends. This article will be updated once that happens.
